Hero Background

SDG 15: Life on Land

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.
1 million species are currently threatened with extinction
80% of the world’s original wetlands have already been lost or degraded
75% of land-based ecosystems show declines in ecological integrity

About Goal 15

Key Targets

  • Conserve and restore terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, mountains, and drylands.
  • •Promote sustainable management of all types of forests and halt deforestation.
  • Combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, and strive to achieve a land-degradation-neutral world.
  • Ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems to support their biodiversity and essential services.
  • Protect threatened species and reduce the risk of extinction across all major animal and plant groups.
  • Prevent the introduction and spread of invasive alien species that harm ecosystems and economies.

Global Progress

Progress on SDG 15 remains limited. Deforestation, habitat loss, and species decline continue in many regions. Some nations expanded protected areas and restoration efforts, but global biodiversity is still under severe pressure.
