About WFEO

The WFEO unites engineers worldwide, championing collaboration, technical leadership, and the next generation of industry professionals

What is the WFEO?

The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) is the global voice of the engineering profession. Established in 1968 under the auspices of UNESCO, it unites national engineering institutions from some 100 countries and represents more than 30 million engineers worldwide. By bringing together diverse engineering disciplines and perspectives, the WFEO plays a central role in shaping how engineering contributes to society, sustainability, and global progress.

An international community

The story of the WFEO began on March 4, 1968, when delegates from 50 scientific and technical associations gathered in Paris to establish the new industry-championing body. Their goal was ambitious: to create a truly international, multidisciplinary federation that would strengthen the engineering profession and elevate its impact on humanity.

More than five decades on, the WFEO continues to evolve as a collaborative forum where engineers and engineering organizations work together to solve global challenges – from climate resilience and infrastructure development to digital transformation and sustainable resource management.

Engineering a better future

The WFEO is an internationally recognized leader of the engineering profession. This means serving as a trusted source of insight, a partner to national and international institutions, and a driving force in how engineering contributes to society.

At the heart of this endeavor is a commitment to building a sustainable, equitable, and peaceful world. The WFEO encourages its members to take an active role in global efforts that improve lives and protect the planet. Through cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and advocacy, the organization supports engineering solutions that address pressing global issues.

The WFEO is the sole body representing engineers of all disciplines worldwide. This unique position enables it to bring the engineering perspective to international discussions and policies, ensuring that technical expertise informs decisions that shape our future.

Supporting the SGDs

A major priority for the WFEO is advancing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Engineering is essential to achieving the SDGs, whether through building resilient infrastructure, developing clean energy systems, improving water and sanitation, or supporting inclusive innovation.

The WFEO promotes the integration of engineering practices that align with these goals, while empowering national and international members to drive SDG-focused initiatives in their own countries.

Global leadership and cooperation

The WFEO’s mission reflects its dedication to strengthening the engineering profession. The organization works to:

Provide information and leadership to the engineering profession on issues of concern to the public or the profession.
Serve society as a respected source of advice on policies relating engineering to the human and natural environment.
Make information available to the countries of the world and facilitate communication between member nations.
Foster peace, security, and sustainable development through the proper application of technology.
Facilitate relationships by adding an engineering dimension to discussions on policies and investment.
