Powering progress

The Royal Academy of Engineering is harnessing the power of engineering to build a sustainable society and an inclusive economy that works for everyone. In collaboration with its Fellows and partners, the Academy is growing talent and developing skills for the future, driving innovation, building global partnerships, influencing policy, and engaging the public.

The organization has the following ambitions:

“
Engineers are drivers of innovation and economic opportunity, developing and delivering new products, services, and enterprises that help to solve pressing problems, and generate jobs and value for society.
— Sir John Lazar CBE FREng, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering

Talent and diversity

The Academy aims to grow talent by training, supporting, mentoring, and funding the most talented and creative researchers, innovators, and leaders from across the engineering profession, with an aim to help more than 7,500 professionals to enhance their leadership skills.

They are developing skills for the future by identifying the challenges of an ever-changing world and developing the skills and ideas needed to build a resilient and diverse engineering profession. This year, the Academy has set a target to work with over 500 engineering businesses and organizations to champion diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Policy and engagement

The Academy is influencing policy through the National Engineering Policy Centre, providing independent and expert guidance to government by drawing on the expertise and creativity of over 450,000 engineers. In its 2020–25 strategy, the Academy has committed to working with more than 1,000 policymakers in the UK and internationally to improve people’s lives.

It is engaging the public by raising awareness of the wonders of engineering and inspiring young people to become the next generation of engineers. Through campaigns such as This is Engineering, the Academy is changing perceptions of the profession by bringing engineering to life for young people from every background in the UK, encouraging them to explore a career in engineering.
