ACWA Power is a developer, investor, and operator of power generation, green hydrogen, and desalinated water plants. With over 20 years in the business, it is revolutionizing the global energy landscape – setting benchmarks and challenging industry practices.
Founded in 2004, the company is at the forefront of innovation, developing large-scale solar, wind, and desalination projects that provide essential resources while prioritizing environmental stewardship. With over 100 assets under its portfolio, ACWA Power’s expertise extends to countries worldwide.
“ACWA Power is transforming the world of energy, delivering clean and sustainable solutions that power entire communities,” says Fawaz Alsagheer, Executive Operations Manager at ACWA Power.
The company is part of the partnership behind the Red Sea Project in the Red Sea region, Saudi Arabia – the world’s most ambitious, fully optimized and decarbonized facility.
The Red Sea project is the world’s first regenerative tourism destination, driven by innovation and cutting-edge technology. It underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainability and clean energy, along with the dedication of its partner companies in construction and operations.
Andrew Okene, President and CEO of ACWA Power subsidiary Marafiq, highlights the significance of this work. “The Red Sea Project is green because of ACWA Power and its partners. This is an unprecedented achievement, an entirely off-grid, fully renewable destination.”
The project’s application of groundbreaking, closed-loop systems enhances sustainable practice. This includes the use of wetlands and their reed beds to naturally clean sewage water until it is safe to be utilised for irrigation in agriculture. The wetlands project alone helps preserve and improve biodiversity in the surrounding area, proving that progress can happen in parallel with the environment.
“We are setting a new benchmark for sustainability, and one, we hope that will inspire similar projects around the world,” says Mohammed Alqurayshah, Civil Engineer at ACWA Power.
Based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, ACWA Power’s operations span 14 countries around the world and employ more than 4,000 people.
ACWA Power ensures that people, planet, and progress thrive through energy efficient and sustainable business practices. Lmaa Alseraihi is the HSE Officer at ACWA Power subsidiary NOMAC, and she plays a crucial role in ensuring that operations meet the highest environmental and safety standards.
“This industry is always changing and always evolving, and you need to keep up with those changes,” says Alseraihi.
Her journey began at the Energy and Water Academy (EWA), an ACWA Power initiative, which helps to open doors for the younger generation to be future leaders in the changing energy landscape. “ACWA Power means being part of a mission that is changing the world. Now, I want to inspire women to join me in the industry,” she says.
Through innovative technologies, collaboration, and a commitment to sustainability, ACWA Power is proving that a clean energy future is not just an ambition, it’s a reality. The company believes in innovating for impact, and its achievements are in line with SDG 7 – ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
“ACWA Power has succeeded in redefining the possible in the utility world, shaping a sustainable future for generations to come,” says Alsagheer.
ACWA Power produces 9.5 million cubic meters of desalinated water every day and has the capacity to generate 78.85 gigawatts of power.
