REGISTER NOWRegistrations are now open for the 2027 WFEO Hackathon on Sustainable Transport Engineering, bringing together engineering students, young engineers and multidisciplinary teams from around the world to develop innovative solutions to real-world challenges.
The Hackathon advances the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDGs 3, 7, 9 and 11, and is framed in connection with the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport 2026 to 2035, supporting global action towards sustainable, inclusive and resilient mobility systems.
Work with other young engineers or join a multidisciplinary team, led by an engineering student, to put your skills, creativity and knowledge into action.
Winning teams will be announced during the 2027 World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development main WFEO celebration in Rome, Italy on 4 March 2027.
THE 2027 THEME
Engineering Sustainable Transport Solutions for People, Planet and Prosperity
Transport is a fundamental enabler of inclusive and sustainable development, connecting people to education, employment, healthcare, essential services and one another, while supporting communities, economies and social wellbeing worldwide.
In 2027, the WFEO Hackathon will explore how engineering can help shape transport systems that are sustainable, inclusive, safe, resilient and accessible to all. The initiative will encourage practical, scalable solutions and innovative ideas that address current mobility challenges while advancing equitable access, climate action and more connected communities.

2. FORM A TEAM
Create a team of 3 to 5 participants, led by an engineering student or a young engineer (under 30).
Multidisciplinary teams are encouraged but must be led by an engineering student or a young engineer (under 30).
3. CHALLENGES RELEASED
The official Challenges are revealed on 20 November 2026.
4. DEVELOP
Research, collaborate and develop your team's innovative solution or idea.
5. SUBMIT
Submit your team's solution before 12 December 2026 23:59 (UTC).
6. SHORTLIST
The highest-scoring submissions progress to the finalist stage.
7. WINNERS
Winners are announced during the main WFEO celebration of the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development in Rome on 4 March 2027.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUBMIT?
The 2027 WFEO Hackathon has a single submission round, giving teams three weeks to develop and submit their solution.
They must submit a 5-minute video, team photo and written submission.
Written submissions must be in English.
Videos may be recorded in another language but must include English subtitles.
Full submission requirements will be provided when the Challenges are released.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
The 2027 WFEO Hackathon is primarily for engineering students and young engineers under 30, while strongly encouraging multidisciplinary collaboration.
Teams consist of 3 to 5 participants and must be led by an engineering student.
Participants from other disciplines are encouraged to bring different skills, perspectives and areas of expertise to help develop stronger, more innovative solutions.

How do we upload our submission?
Submission links and instructions will be provided when the 2027 Hackathon Challenges are released.
Do I have to be a university student to participate?
No. The Hackathon is primarily for engineering students and young engineers under 30.
Does everyone have to be from the same university or institution?
No. Teams can include participants from different universities, institutions and locations.
Is there any cost to participate?
No. The 2027 WFEO Hackathon is completely free to enter.
When will we receive the Challenges?
The official Challenges will be released on 20 November 2026, marking the beginning of the three-week Hackathon period.
How many participants can be in a team?
Teams consist of 3 to 5 participants and must be led by a young engineer or an engineering student.
Multidisciplinary teams are encouraged but must be led by a young engineer or an engineering student.
What can you tell us about the Challenges?
The Challenges will focus on real-world issues where engineering can contribute to Sustainable Transport and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The official Challenges remain confidential until 20 November 2026.
Do I need a team before I register?
No. Register individually and use our Facebook group to connect with potential teammates.
Can my team include people from different countries?
Yes. Teams can collaborate across universities, institutions, disciplines and countries.
Can we use AI in our submission?
Yes. AI tools can assist with your submission, including creating visualizations.
However, AI must not mislead or misrepresent the potential or feasibility of your solution, including through unrealistic visualizations or false deepfake endorsements.
Who owns the intellectual property for our solution?
Entrants retain ownership of their designs. By participating, entrants give WFEO permission to use and modify submitted photographs, videos and written content to promote current and future Hackathons.
Can we use copyrighted material?
Teams should use original material wherever possible. Music, stock footage and other third-party content must be copyright-free or appropriately licensed.
