SDG 5: Gender Equality

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
1 in 3 women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.
122 million girls are out of school.
49 countries lack legal protections against domestic violence.

About Goal 5

SDG 5 aims for gender equality by ending discrimination, violence, and harmful practices. It promotes equal education, economic participation, and leadership opportunities for women. Access to health services and shared household responsibilities also support equality and stronger communities.

Key Targets

  • End all forms of discrimination against women and girls everywhere.
  • Eliminate violence against women, including trafficking and exploitation.
  • End harmful practices such as child marriage and female genital mutilation.
  • Recognize and value unpaid care and domestic work.
  • Ensure women’s full participation and equal leadership in political and public life.
  • Guarantee universal access to reproductive health and rights.
  • Provide equal rights to economic resources, property, and financial services.
  • Strengthen policies and laws that support gender equality at all levels.

Global Progress

Progress on SDG 5 is too slow. More women hold leadership roles and access education, but inequality persists. Gender based violence remains widespread, and legal protections are inconsistent. Unpaid care work limits opportunities. Some countries expanded rights and services, but deeper social and legal changes are needed.
