What’s in a name?

Flower’s name stems from the term “flexible power”. It’s a concept that goes to the heart of the clean-energy services and technology that this Swedish company, headquartered in Stockholm, provides.

As founder and CEO John Diklev explains, “The transition to renewables cannot happen without smart systems to regulate and optimize our power grids.”

The energy to succeed

Whether you produce clean energy, consume it, or own the infrastructure that distributes it, reliable regulation tools are essential. To this end, Flower’s cutting-edge forecasting, optimization and trading software, and investment in modern energy infrastructure, such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) that support the main grid, are helping to deliver a steady and reliable electricity supply. At the same time, Flower is revolutionizing how renewables, from solar to wind, are managed.

“It’s an energy landscape fit for the future and we’re helping to create it right now,” says Diklev.

Where in the world?

Although Flower only set out in 2020, it is now Sweden’s leader in clean-energy optimization and trading, and is steadily building a battery storage portfolio. With an aim to be at the forefront of society’s transition to sustainable energy – providing reliable, flexible systems that are free from fossil fuels – the company has its sights set on expansion into Europe.

Powering progress

Flowers’ expertise in software development and battery storage systems enable those it works with to reap the benefits of clean energy, anticipate energy consumption, and stabilize supply and costs.

For example, in 2023, Flower applied its optimization platform to a battery park in the small industrial town of Grums, Sweden. The following year, the battery system proved to be instrumental in stabilizing the national grid when a nuclear plant in Forsmark was temporarily taken out of operation. As a result, the episode passed without widescale impact and cost.

On a consumer-facing level, the Flower Hub is a smart home-energy-management device that connects to domestic battery systems. It offers homeowners control and flexibility over their energy service, and has the potential to generate income while supporting clean electric power across Sweden.

What does a sustainable future look like?

Flower is working towards a time when renewables are responsible for the majority of our electricity generation, with a clear focus on SDG 7 – the aim to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

“Imagine how important the concept of flexible power will be by the time we reach that future,” says Diklev. “Our children and grandchildren will be living in cities and other communities driven by clean, sustainable, and reliable energy. We make that dream of energy transition a little bit more real every day. It’s a big responsibility but it’s also something to be proud of.”
