Building a resilient world

Green infrastructure

Through its projects across the world, international engineering and operating company Egis stands at the forefront of creating sustainable, resilient, and inclusive lands.

“Our purpose is clear – to improve people’s quality of life while supporting the social and economic development of communities and drastically reducing carbon emissions,” says Laurent Germain, Egis CEO.

This mission is embedded in all the sectors and businesses of the company. The approach goes beyond merely complying with regulations; rather it is about proactively seeking out opportunities to reduce carbon footprint and waste, increase energy efficiency, and preserve biodiversity and natural resources.

Future-ready solutions

The sectors in which Egis operates (construction, transport, and industry) meet people’s fundamental needs but also contribute significantly to global emissions, so for Egis rethinking how to design and operate infrastructure is crucial.

By embedding its scientific and technical expertise at the outset of projects, Egis can deliver bold and key solutions to ensure infrastructures are “future ready”. In other words, infrastructures are not only adapted to today’s climate, but also to tomorrow’s.

“Getting involved at an early stage, when the most important sustainability decisions need to be made, gives us a strong social responsibility. The choices we make today will have a powerful impact on future generations,” says Martine Jauroyon, Chief Sustainability and Engagement Officer at Egis.

Where in the world?

Headquartered in Paris, this French company of some 20,000 employees has evolved over 80 years. Today, 67% of its work takes place outside France, and it has a network of offices on every continent.

Tackling climate change

“Our ambition is to be an enabler and an accelerator of the social, ecological, and energy transition. To achieve this, we have two superpowers: eco-design and innovation,” says Jauroyon.

The company’s eco design aims to address all environmental issues in a systemic approach and throughout the project lifecycle. By 2030, 100% of Egis projects that can be eco-designed will be. The T6 Nord tram extension, in collaboration with the Greater Lyon Authority, exemplifies its work to achieve climate goals. During the construction of the tram line, Egis installed infiltration systems in the ground beneath the track. Heavy rainfall is soaked up close to where it falls, avoiding run-off. By managing rainwater at source, the project makes this urban area less vulnerable to flooding while also providing essential infrastructure.

Egis innovates in sectors such as climate-change mitigation solutions (including low carbon materials, reuse, and bioclimatic facades), carbon sequestration through nature-based solutions (such as Landboost, Seaboost, and Soil.is), and adaptation to climate change (for example, identification of climate vulnerabilities with EVA-climat, resilience planning, and crisis management).

What does a sustainable future look like?

“It means actively contributing to a world where human wellbeing and the environment are in harmony,” says Jauroyon.

As such, Egis’s work is guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 13, which aims to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
