Colt Technology Services is a global digital infrastructure company that provides high-performance networks and voice services to customers worldwide.
The company’s story began in 1992, when it was founded as the City of London Telecommunications (Colt). By 2008, it had expanded to Asia and the US, and laid tens of thousands of kilometers of fiber.
Fast-forward to today’s hyperconnected world, and as demand for high-speed, secure, and reliable connectivity grows, Colt is committed to ensuring that digital progress does not come at the expense of the environment.
Colt is addressing this challenge by embedding sustainability across its entire organisation. The company is “sustainable by design”, which means that it is guided by its passion and commitment to sustainability.
“We minimize power consumption and waste, enabling businesses to grow without a significant environmental impact,” says Vivek Gaur, Vice President of Engineering at Colt.
To tackle the environmental challenges of digital growth, Colt has developed a three-pronged approach for its infrastructure:
Greening the network – modernizing equipment, recycling materials, and shifting towards more sustainable energy solutions.
Providing intelligent connectivity – using AI-driven networking and the on-demand connectivity platform Network-as-a-Service (NaaS), to optimize resource use and reduce unnecessary energy consumption.
Building efficient infrastructure – designing networks that reduce power consumption and waste, helping businesses to grow while lowering their environmental footprint.
Headquartered in London but with 6,000 people working around the globe, Colt has over 230 cities connected to its network and provides a service across 40 countries.
Its services enable everything from international financial trading to cloud connectivity for multinational enterprises. At the same time, Colt’s infrastructure supports remote work, connects families across continents, and helps with global collaboration on critical challenges, from scientific research to education.
Colt believes that businesses thrive when people and societies flourish, which is why it focuses on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
“We recognize that our work to build sustainable connectivity extends beyond creating technological infrastructures. It must also encompass making positive change in the communities we operate in,” says Caroline Griffin Pain, Chief Legal Officer at Colt.
The company’s community-driven initiatives also foster digital education. Through employee-led outreach programs, Colt supports children in STEM education, providing refurbished laptops and hands-on mentorship to empower disadvantaged children, youth, and underrepresented groups with essential digital skills.
Through sustainable infrastructure, community engagement, and a commitment to responsible innovation, Colt is proving that technology can drive societal progress, creating stronger, more connected communities while protecting the planet.
As such, Colt aligns with SDG 9, which aims to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation.
“We are committed to sustainability by design in all that we do. Colt is reshaping the way businesses connect by embedding environmental responsibility into their operations,” says Griffin Pain.
It is estimated that data centers and networks account for nearly 1% of global CO2 emissions, which could surpass aviation if left unchecked, according to the International Energy Agency. “At Colt, we’re at the forefront of tackling this,” says Griffin Pain.
