The theme of this year’s celebration is "Unleashing the power of engineers to advance the Sustainable Development Goals".
This global gathering will bring together policymakers, leading scientists, engineers, industry representatives, and international organizations to explore the transformative role of engineering in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
About the event
On World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development, UNESCO and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations - WFEO will convene an event at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, organised under the umbrella of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD).
This global gathering will bring together policymakers, leading scientists, engineers, industry representatives, and international organizations to explore the transformative role of engineering in advancing the SDGs.
Through expert panel discussions, the event will highlight engineering’s contribution to shaping policies for sustainable development, strengthening capacities, addressing gender disparities in the field, and advancing digital transformation, energy solutions, and infrastructure development. The event will also showcase the results of the World Engineering Day Hackathon, celebrating youth-driven innovations.
Winners of the hackathon on engineering to be announced at the event
The World Federation of Engineering Organization (WFEO), a longstanding partner of UNESCO, coordinates WED celebrations each year including a hackathon where engineering students work in teams to develop solutions that contribute to sustainable development. UNESCO and WFEO collaborate to advance engineering as a cornerstone for sustainable development. Examples of collaboration include Africa Engineering Week and WFEO’s contributions to the UNESCO report Engineering for Sustainable Development: Delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals.
